Father's Day

I just wanted to take a moment to say Happy Father's Day to all of the Dads that are out there. I am lucky that I have 4 great children who I am proud of, even though none have followed in my footsteps as far as country music and the Grand Ole Opry.

But being Father's Day, it got me to thinking of some of the Fathers and Sons, or Daughters, that we have seen together on the Opry stage. The easy ones would be:

Roy and Roy Acuff, Jr.
Ernest and Justin Tubb
Hank and Jimmie Snow
Bill and James Monroe
Bill and Bill Carlisle, Jr.
Buck and Sharon/Cheryl White
George and Lorrie Morgan
Marty and Ronnie Robbins
George IV and George V Hamilton
Grandpa and Alisa Jones
Bobby and Bobby Bare, Jr
Charlie and Sonny Louvin
Porter and Denise Wagoner
Bobby and Bobby Osborne, Jr.

I know that there have been some fathers and children who have appeared separately on the Opry, such as Hank and Hank Williams, Jr., but I was thinking of those together. I know there are many, many, that I am missing, so let's see what else we can come up with.

Again, Happy Father's Day to all!!!

  1. Vince Gill has sung with his daughter. And Del Mc Coury's boys are in his band

  2. Stonewall Jackson's son played drums in his Minutemen band for many years.

  3. Such easy ones I forgot with my quick list. I will add Jesse and Keith McReynolds. And I know there were quite a few children that played in their father's bands at one time, such as Stonewall Jackson, Jr.

Stoney Cooper and Carol Lee Cooper. And happy Father's Day to you, Byron.

  5. Fred, Bismarck:

Johnnie Wright with son Bobby for sure, and with daughters Ruby and Carole Sue probably.

And, Byron, don't feel alone in having failed to make country fans of your kids. I'm a proud father of three, the youngest 43 now, and all have resisted country's blandishments. Although I'll bet you that by osmosis all of them know more about the real country article than the average CMHF voter!

  6. Gary Newman was a member of Cajun Country and was a professional musician, with a rock band in Louisiana, so he appeared with Jimmy C. Didn't Adam Locklin appear with Hank?

  7. Uncle Dave and Dorris Macon.

  8. Adam came out with Hank most times in the last couple of years and he sounded enough like Hank that you had to listen close on the radio to tell where he was helping Hank as he began to loose a little.

I'm pretty sure son Jamie played drums with Bill Anderson a few times, anyone back that up? Charley Prides son or sons appeared with him and didn't Ray Pillow's son back in TNN days?

  9. I'll add a few more here and feel free to shoot me down if they are not true.

Jim Ed Brown and daughter Kim, Dr. Ralph Stanley and Ralph Stanley II, Earl, Randy and Gary Scruggs, and Ray and Cliff Price. I'm pretty sure I remember Karie Reeves preforming with Del.

Surely Ralph and Danny Davis played instruments on stage during the same performance backing someone. Did Kayton ever back his son Louie Roberts? When Leroy Van Dyke has appeared recently, did his son Ben appear with him? And didn't Mark Jones appear with Grandpa?

I can think of several women performers who have had their children appear with them as well.

Byron, this was an intriguing post! Thanks.

  10. Going WAY back... Asher and Jimmy Sizemore. If Jimmy is still living, he's the oldest living person (in time span) that has been an Opry member.

  11. Thanks David.......I couldn't remember if they were father and son and I didn't have time to research!

    This has been interesting.

  12. Jimmie Sizemore's daughter, Sally, had "Happy Father's Day in Heaven" on her Facebook page which suggests he may have passed away recently. However I couldn't find any obituary by googling. I did notice that Mr. Sizemore's own Facebook page hasn't been updated since 2012
