Crystal Gayle-Newest Member of the Grand Ole Opry

During the Tuesday Night Opry, Carrie Underwood made a surprise appearance and asked Crystal Gayle if she would like to become the newest member of the Grand Ole Opry. In my opinion, an outstanding move by Pete Fisher and the Opry management. Well deserved honor for Crystal that I don't believe anyone can complain about. And it adds a veteran act who I am sure will support the show.

The induction will take place on Saturday January 21st.

More to come.

  1. Well, I'm glad for the Opry. I'm glad for Crystal. Not who I would have put atop the list, but no complaints here.

  2. Its about darn time! Such a well deserved induction a looooong time coming. And of course, like the last opry member invitation, the one night I miss an Opry show, they invite one of my favorites to be a member!

Pete Fisher is really playing it safe here. After decades of frequent guest appearances every year, shes definitely a new member who will show up. With her induction, perhaps other longtime regular guests will get the invitation. Better late than never.

Congratulations to Crystal Gayle! Will she and loretta lynn be the oprys first solo sibling members?

  4. Great news! She'll add a lot to the Opry, not just musically, but also by adding some much-needed class to the show. Good move, Pete Fisher!

  5. Carrie Underwood is wonderful, and I am so glad Crystal is now a member.
I'm attending this Friday night's 'Opry.
I'm hoping (praying) that Pete Fisher has finally seen the light and will ask Chris Jansen to join (after what, 150 appearances?)

  7. Fred, Bismarck:

It's hard to get a 'read' on Pete Fisher and where he wants to take the Opry. While Gayle might please some on here, she's yesterday's news (by 40 years) as a marquee item, and not the kind to draw in the young crowd that, at other times, Fisher seems to aim for.

Gayle has always been from the pop side and is unlikely to excite the country crowd, either.

With all the other options out there, this pick is a head-scratcher.

  8. Fred, I view the Opry asking Crystal to become a member very similar to when they asked Mel Tillis and Charlie Daniels to join. Both were on the tail end of their careers, yet still popular enough that those attending the Opry are entertained. Also, just based on their ages, their time at the Opry will be relatively short. Crystal does have name recognition which is missing from a lot of those making their Opry debut.

    1. Plus they'll have another "Hall of Famer" to boast of. I predict she will more than likely be the next female inducted (from whichever category). Seems like hope for Dottie West is gone, and Tanya Tucker and The Judds and possibly Anne Murray may be considered soon, but I believe Crystal is a shoe in in the not so near future.

  9. Maybe Crystal will encourage her sister to "come back to the Opry" now that she is also a member - time will tell.

  11. I saw Loretta Lynn over the weekend and she was very frail. She said she had glaucoma that was getting worse and had to be helped on and off the stage and did not move after they seated her. Her voice was strong but she did seem confused at time, which is how she's been the last few times I saw her. I'd like to see her on the Opry more often but we also have to remember she's an elderly lady in her mid 80s. I agree with Byron that Crystal fills the void left by Mel Tillis' illness.
