Grand Ole Opry 11/25 & 11/26

With the Thanksgiving weekend upon us, the Grand Ole Opry has posted the schedules for the 3 shows this weekend; the Friday Night Opry and Saturday's Grand Ole Opry.

Country Music Hall of Fame member Vince Gill is returning to the Opry on Saturday night. Vince has been gone from the Opry for a little while as he has been touring. But now that he is back in town and performing his Christmas shows with Amy Grant, Vince is back on the Opry schedule. He will be joined by another Hall of Fame member, Connie Smith, who is also scheduled for the Friday Night Opry. Joining Connie for all 3 of the shows are Opry members John Conlee, Mike Snider, and Jeannie Seely. Friday night will see 2 additional Opry members as Riders In The Sky and Jesse McReynolds are scheduled, while Bobby Osborne is on the list for Saturday night.

As to the guest artists this weekend, the name that stands out is John Oates, who is half of the duo of Hall & Oates. John will be making a solo appearance on the Opry this weekend as Pete Fisher and the Opry's management continue to reach out to a variety of artists. While John is not known for his country music, he has completed work on a Christmas project with The Time Jumpers. That could very well explain why he is a guest on Vince's segment. Joining John Oates on Saturday night will be Love and Theft, Jimmy Wayne, Suzy Bogguss and Flatt Lonesome.

The Friday Night Opry has guests artists Jaida Dreyer, Johnny Lee, Will Hoge, Mary Sarah, T. Graham Brown and the Annie Moses Band listed.

One more item of note: The Ernest Tubb Midnight Jamboree announced that the show this weekend, to be hosted by Leona Williams, will take place at the downtown Broadway shop. The taping will still take place at 10:00. At this point, it is a one time deal, but I really think this is the right move, especially with the Opry downtown at the Ryman. For those who have not noticed, the Ernest Tubb Record Shop downtown has been hosting several live events recently, including one last weekend with Mark Collie and Charles Esten, among others. Of further note, the past several years has seen the Midnight Jamboree suspend broadcasts during the winter months, instead going with previously aired shows. This winter, the Jamboree will be going live each weekend, with the exception of Christmas Eve. In my opinion, these shows need to take place at the downtown shop, as with the Opry at the Ryman and the crowds that are downtown for the bars and other events, it just makes sense. And to be honest, the Texas Troubadour theater area is a ghost town on Saturday night.

There you have it for this week. I hope everyone enjoys the Opry this weekend and a very Happy Birthday to Glen Thompson, founder of the Grand Ole Opry Fan Club, and a true friend.

Enjoy!!

  1. Kacey Musgraves had a show at the Ernest Tubb Record Shop prior to last Friday Night's Opry. Only a few lucky folks could squeeze in.
And when I went to the store Saturday AM, I was very pleasantly surprised at the much improved appearance as well as the much improved inventory of products.
Since they closed the store out by the 'Opry, the downtown store has improved dramatically in my opinion.
Hope they can make it. It's very important to the overall health of the 'Opry and the downtown Nashville scene.
Also saw Hoot Hester's daughter Rachel Hester with her band perform at Robert's Western World. She is fantastic.
Downtown was hopping Friday night and even Saturday morning.
    Tourists everywhere.

    1. I hope they had more of Kacey's cd's by then. A friend of mine was telling me that he was there on Friday. He got there an hour and half early. He was looking for her new Christmas cd and couldn't find it, so he got the vinyl( which they didn't have much of). While at the register he heard them say, we've been waiting for the shipment all day. He thought you have a huge star like her and then don't have in stock what she's coming to promote. Doesn't sound good for the ET record shop. Bob

  3. I have some interesting notes on the 1991 show. I must have got the lineup from the phone or over the radio because I show a couple of folks that were to appear that didn't which agrees with Byron's list.

First, Wilma Lee Cooper was scheduled to be on Porter's portion on the second show. Second, Jimmy Dickens was to be on with Roy Acuff on the first show and was to host the portion on the second show that John Conlee hosted. My notes say that Jimmy had the flue. I also show that John Conlee appeared on Grandpa's portion of the second show along with Jeans Shepard. Guess I could be wrong on that but I made a specific note about it.

Colorado Country Morning that Hank Snow opened his second show with is one of my favorite later songs he did. It was from his 1975 LP Easy to Love. He had opened the second show two weeks prior on November 9th with it and said it was his first time to ever do it on the Opry. That inspired me to write to Mr. Snow, my one and only time, and unfortunately I did not get a response.

I know that many have said that this era of the Opry had become stale and predictable but for me being in my early 20's it was a wonderful and learning time to listen to what was left of the golden era of the Opry!

  4. Jim: you are correct about Jimmy Dickens. He did have the flu and was scheduled with Roy Acuff on the 1st show. On the 2nd show, he was scheduled to host the 10:45 segment and was replaced by John Conlee. For the 2nd show, John Conlee was orginially scheduled for the 10:30 segment hosted Grandpa Jones, with Jean Shepard. However, since John was moved to host Jimmy's segment, it was just Grandpa and Jean in that 10:15 slot.

And yes, Wilma Lee Cooper was also scheduled for Porter's second show, but cancelled.

Jim, I don't list John Conlee actually performing on Grandpa's segment on the 2nd show, but the segment he hosted followed that one. Perhaps that is where the confusion was.

    1. Ops, my confusion Jim on the segments. Grandpa hosted the 10:30 slot, not at 10:15, which was Roy Acuff. Then Conlee hosted at 10:45 instead of Dickens.

  5. Byron: thanks for the confirmation on my notes. Perhaps I wrote things down the wrong way when I noted that John had appeared as a guest on Pa's portion. I usually wrote up my notes to a more formal report on Sunday so maybe I couldn't read my own notes. :)

  6. Nice to see Suzy Bogguss back on the Opry. She would make a great member, IMO.

Regarding the 1955 lineup, the correct titles of Jim Reeves' songs are "Yonder Comes a Sucker" and "I've Lived a Lot in My Time." And I know they sponsored Roy Acuff, but their name is "Royal Crown Cola."

Thank you so much, Byron, for keeping us informed about what's going on at the Opry, as well as preserving its rich history!

And thanks for the compliment and I agree with you on Suzy Bogguss.

  7. Double ditto Suzy Bogguss.
    Right after Chris Jansen! :)

  8. Most definitely, Suzy would be a great addition. Her sheer talent, along with her versatility, would be great for the Opry. As many have suggested, Chris Jansen is another "no-brainer" for Opry membership. To help add to bluegrass music, it seems that Rhonda Vincent would be a logical choice. Also, she is another artist with versatility.

  9. Dailey & Vincent would also be fine with me.

  10. Well with the rate of inductions lately, and with Cyrstal Gayle going in soon, it's doubtful anyone will become a member for a year or more.
