Grand Ole Opry 2/1 & 2/2

Welcome to February, and in the case of the Grand Ole Opry, welcome back to the Grand Ole Opry House after the winter run at the Ryman Auditorium. While the Ryman is nice and historic (and I still enjoy going down there for a show), the comforts of the Opry House are missed. And I am sure all of the artists are glad to be back.

As I post this on Wednesday evening, I see that Grand Ole Opry member Jesse McReynolds is on the schedule for Saturday night. Jesse has not been on the Opry for months as he has worked to regain his strength after his recent illness, and some wondered if he would ever be back. After all, this Grand Ole Opry legend who will be celebrating his 55th anniversary as a member of the Grand Ole Opry on March 2, will be celebrating his 90th birthday in July. I know many of us are looking forward to hearing Jesse on Saturday night, and hopefully he makes it back.

As far as his fellow Grand Ole Opry members, scheduled for both nights are John Conlee, Mike Snider, Connie Smith and Riders In The Sky. In fact, those four artists will be hosting segments both nights, and in that order. Joining that quartet on Friday night will be Bobby Osborne, while on Saturday night, in addition to Jesse, the Whites are scheduled.

Guesting on Friday night will be former "Nashville" star Charles Esten, along with the Steep Canyon Rangers (minus Steve Martin), comedian Henry Cho, Tyler Rich, Kalie Shorr, Dukes of Hazzard star John Schneider and Charlie Worsham, who is also on the schedule for Saturday night. Joining Charlie on the Saturday guest list is Rachel Wammack, Gone West featuring Colbie Caillat, Jerrod Niemann, and the legendary Lee Greenwood.

Friday February 1
7:00: John Conlee (host); Kalie Shorr; Bobby Osborne & The Rocky Top X-Press
7:30: Mike Snider (host); Tyler Rich; John Schneider

Intermission
8:15: Connie Smith (host); Gone West featuring Colbie Caillat; Opry Square Dancers
8:45: Riders In The Sky (host); Jerrod Niemann; Lee Greenwood

That come out to 12 artists on Friday night, 11 on Saturday, with 5 Opry members on Friday and 6 on Saturday.

Hosting the Ernest Tubb Midnight Jamboree at the Texas Troubadour Theater this week will be Sylvia.

    1. It’s time for Hank Williams Jr to get in. They need to put aside whatever it is they have against him, and put him in, he’s long overdue as one of the greatest ever

  2. You all can root for your favorite crooked team for the super bowl this weekend, but I'm rooting for Sylvia's team (Nobody).

  3. I notice that Bill Anderson is scheduled, according to his website, next weekend. I hope he's doing ok after the loss of his partner Vickie.

  4. If you have not heard, Harold Bradley passed on Thursday at age 93. Articles are at the Tennessean and New York Times websites and I'm sure many more. You will recall him appearing on the Opry with Mandy Barnett in recent years and being involved in her recordings.

Looking forward to hearing Jesse tonight. Hope is up to it and I wish him all the best.

  5. It was a pleasure to hear Dr. Jesse McReynolds on the Opry tonight. He sounded good and had his full group with him. Hopefully this is the start of seeing and hearing more of Jesse on the Opry stage. (And yes, Jesse was awarded a Doctorate in Fine Arts from Glenville College in West Virginia yesterday at the Country Music Hall of Fame, along with his late brother Jim, along with Bobby and Sonny Osborne, Mac Wiseman and Buddy Griffin, who was with Jesse tonight on the Opry).

  6. My son (Nat V) attended the 'Opry Saturday night with his wife.
He absolutely loved it. Said he was amazed at how well Jesse played the mandolin, especially at his age! He was very pleasantly surprised by Charlie Worsham and couldn't believe Buck White could walk all over the keyboard at his age.
We have both noted how groups that sound wonderful at the 'Orpy don't sound all that great on the broadcast. He said Gone West and Lee Greenwood sounded wonderful in person. I thought they didn't sound very good on the broadcast.
Not sure how that works, but we both have pretty good ears and noticed the same phenomenon.
Really jealous of my son, he got to see and feel the 'Opry and I was stuck at home just listening to it! :)
We both agree there is something absolutely magical about attending a live performance of the Grand Old 'Opry.
And, I'm proud I've raised a son who understands the finer things in life!

    1. I am so glad that your son experienced the Opry. There is something magical about seeing the show in person, on that I agree. As to Charlie Worsham, I agree. I think he is a great young talent.
