Grand Ole Opry 11/13 & 11/14

So how did everyone feel about having the Friday Night Opry back? I thought last week was a very nice show and this week's show looks even better. Six Grand Ole Opry members, and one future member are on the schedule for this Friday and while the number of artists might be low, the quality is outstanding.

Friday November 13
7:00: Connie Smith; Carly Pearce
7:30: Oak Ridge Boys
8:00: Crystal Gayle; Steve Wariner
8:30: Old Crow Medicine Show

Saturday night's Grand Ole Opry also looks like another fine show with good variety. As with the Friday show, there are just 7 acts listed on the schedule of which 3 are Opry members. Following the pattern from last Saturday, the televised segment will feature one Opry member and two guest artists.

Saturday November 14
7:00: Opry Square Dancers; Kathy Mattea; John Conlee
7:30: Bill Anderson; Charlie Worsham
8:00: Jon Pardi; Cam; Oak Ridge Boys

There you have it for this week. As always, thanks for reading and commenting and I hope everyone enjoys the Grand Ole Opry this weekend.

  1. Please make Kathy Mattea an Opry member ---- she has made so many appearances - so many more than some established members --- she is a treasure with still a wonderful voice who embodies true country music ----- and Kathy is a darn nice person in addition --- Dashmann - Flushing, Michigan --

    1. I'm for that, and I think Byron is suggesting that Carly Pearce is on deck for membership, so probably not Kathy yet, unfortunately.

I do understand that having fewer acts is probably a good idea right now to limit exposure. It worries me a bit that Bill, at 83, and John, at 74, are there. Then again, the Oaks are all getting up there as well!

    2. William Lee Golden 81, Duane Allen 77, Richard Sterban 77, Joe Bonsall 72 Bob

    3. Carly is a little on the rock side and her " I have better things to do than play the Opry" days are ahead of her , but Kathy Mattea is a way better fit for the Opry ----- and I am sure she would be a faithful regular performer there ----- Dashmann, Flushing, Michigan

  4. If anyone can help Sven out it would be greatly appreciated. I know he is a huge Larry Gatlin fan and would appreciate a recording from Friday night's show. Thanks in advance.

  5. Yes, the "youngest" ORB is 72, they are also extremely vulnerable. They are doing their Christmas show at the Opryland Hotel and I am sure every precaution is being made for their safety and health (as well as those working and attending).

  8. The Oak Ridge Boys have cancelled for tonight's (Saturday) Grand Ole Opry due to illness. Sorry to see. I know last night Duane Allen sounded a little off. Not sure if that is the reason but just a guess. No replacement as of yet for the TV portion.

  9. Kathy Mattes as the last minute replacement for The ORB. Such a pleasant voice.

Here's hoping Duane gets well soon if he's the one who is ill.

  10. I know this is off topic but have any of you had trouble buying music from the Ernest Tubb record shop? I’m trying to get a jump on Christmas shopping but when I search for artists such as Roy Acuff and others I keep getting a not found message and I know that can’t be right. Comments?

    1. Bill, for what it is worth, I know that the record shop has a new updated website so perhaps that could be the issue. Personally, I have not ordered anything from the shop in a while. Perhaps you could give them a call? Sorry that I couldn't help further.

    2. Bill: I tried to help you, but I haven't had any luck either. Sorry. Bob

    3. Bill: There phone number is (615) 255-7503 if you want to try calling there. That's what i'm being told to do. Bob

    4. Thanks for your help. I'll keep trying and will give them a call. I could easily find better prices all over the internet but I prefer to support this institution that has done so much for our music over the years...that's worth the extra cost!

  12. There is an amazing documentary on the life and career of Hank Locklin that you should check out. It’s showing on a handful of PBS stations around the country but the PBS station in Pensacola is streaming it for a limited time on its website. It features Bill Anderson, Ralph Emery. Dolly Parton, Jimmy Capps, Marty Stuart, Crystal Gayle, Dwight Yoakam, Jeannie Seely, Charley Pride and many others along with some great photos and video clips that I have never seen before. I don’t know how long it will be available but you should carve out an hour of time watch.

    https://www.wsre.org/hank-locklin-country-musics-timeless-tenor/

    From the WSRE website:

Commemorating the 60th anniversary of his 1960 Grand Ole Opry induction, Hank Locklin: Country Music’s Timeless Tenor recalls the unquestionable talent, unorthodox career path and notable contributions of prolific songwriter, Grammy-nominated recording artist and Grand Ole Opry star Hank Locklin. The story of his music and lifelong career is told by industry friends and admirers including his youngest son — Hank Adam Locklin, Bill Anderson, Jimmy Capps, Dave Cobb, Ralph Emery, Crystal Gayle, Vince Gill, William Lee Golden, Buddy Kalb, Dolly Parton, Charley Pride, Jeannie Seely, Ray Stevens, Alan Stoker, Marty Stuart, Jesse Wells and Dwight Yoakam.
With historical photos and footage, the film covers his path from Florida’s Gulf Coast to Nashville by way of Texas (where he began his recording career), his influence on the Nashville sound with RCA Victor producer Chet Atkins, his hit records — including country standards “Please Help Me, I’m Falling” and the self-penned “Send Me the Pillow You Dream On” — and pioneering concept albums, his popularity overseas, and five decades of performing as a beloved member of the Grand Ole Opry where he made his final appearance in 2007 at age 89, still hitting the high notes.
