Charlie Douglas

I just found out today that former WSM and Grand Ole Opry announcer Charlie Douglas passed away on Thanksgiving day. Charlie began his career in 1953 at KLIC in Monroe, Louisiana. In 1956 he became the first program director at KOCY in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He then worked in Ashville, North Carolina and New Orleans before arriving in Nashville and working at WSM, where he stayed for many years. He retired in 1995 to devote time to running CDX, with his partner Paul Lovelace. Charlie was elected to the Country Music DJ Hall of Fame in 1994.

    That's a shame. A great voice, a wonderful DJ, and, lest we forget, he did some great comedy records, too. I believe he and Ralph Emery have the same birthday, too.

    My love for classic country music comes from discovering Charlie's trucker's show the Road Gang that was on WWL in New Orleans starting in the 1970s. He played a lot of older country music on that program as the playlist was mainly requests by truck drivers.

    You sure know the lot of history about country music I'll give him credit for that I love to hear him talk a great DJ gone but not forgotten rest in peace Charlie Douglas
