I know some of us were wondering if Grand Ole Opry member Luke Combs would find time for the Opry with his heavy tour schedule. It is nice to see that after his December appearance on the Opry that he will be back on the Opry this Tuesday night for two shows. Hopefully the trend will continue.
He will be joined on both shows by fellow Opry member Darius Rucker, along with member Jeannie Seely.

Grand Ole Opry LLC Classic Country 650 WSM Nashville has made some cuts to its staff and schedule.
ReplyDeleteEliminated from the daily schedule are the “Nashville Today” talk show hosted by Devon O’Day and Lexi Carter in the 10am-12pm and the live overnight “WSM All Nighter with Marcia Campbell”. The station has also moved the nightly “Route 650” Bluegrass/Americana show from the 6pm hour to Saturdays from 4-6pm. “Off The Track” hosted by Liz Allison has been eliminated from the weekend schedule.
“Nashville Today” had aired in afternoon drive from 3-6pm until the short-lived addition of “SportsNight with George Plaster” to the WSM schedule in July 2019. Mike Terry’s midday airshift has been extended back to 10am-3pm.
The schedule changes accompany the departure of Chris Kulick from his second tenure as WSM General Manager. Kulick has joined local newspaper publisher Main Street Media as New Business Development Sales Manager after serving as GM of WSM from 2003-2010 and again from July 2015 until last month. Program Director J Patrick Tinnell is now listed as the WSM General Manager, but no official announcement has been made. Tinnell had been promoted from Digital Program Director to Program Director last summer.

ReplyDeleteIt seems like the reasons for tuning into WSM are getting fewer and fewer. I would tune in to Marcia's program often while driving to my 4am shift at work and it seemed she had good sponsorship. I guess keeping the light on for Nashville radio is no longer a priority.

ReplyDeleteI'm not sure Mike Terry is even live on the air. Nothing related to the city or history of Nashville. Sounds canned to me, and for sure the music often isn't traditional country music.
WSM as a Nashville fixture is dying, pure and simple.
Really sad day for me. Used to be my go to station at home, but not so sure now.
May have to amend my comments regarding Mike Terry.

But the last two songs have been traditional country music, so maybe there's hope!
I do believe that most of the time Mike Terry is now voice tracked. There are times when he could be doing the show live and that was perhaps what was heard today.

I wonder if Marcia will get to keep her gig with the Opry Square Dancers? I've also noticed that Eddie Stubbs is getting less airtime than normal especially when it comes to announcing the Friday night show. I would like to believe that WSM management appreciates the value they have in Eddie (and Jeff H.) but with some of the recent moves I'm no longer quite so sure. I hope he keeps his contacts and resume current.

DeleteIn regards to Eddie, I had assumed he stepped back from always announcing Friday night because he wanted to spend more time with his bride. I could be wrong on that.

I know none of us like it, but the fact is that wsm is one of the least popular stations and lowest rated in all of Tennessee. Most people these days don't even listen to am radio anyway. I'd love to see it continue as it is, but it might take pressure from the country music community, and I don't know if that will happen. The sad reality is that the opry is much more successful than the station which created it and wsm probably has less than 100,000 listeners world wide.

Does management really think the new format will bring in more listeners? WSM has a niche, albeit a small one.
But nobody can enjoy the canned stuff I'm hearing right now.
Music on AM radio is a dying breed but that doesn't mean there are not successful stations out there. WSM has been fiddling with its format and playlist over the past several years and I think much of their trouble is self-inflicted. No, they are not going to be a Top 10 station in Nashville but they have a loyal following, especially on the internet, but if they can't get their act together they will continue to lose those loyal listeners.
DeleteRandy Travis was at the Opry tonight. He appears disabled more than some able bodied members. His love for the Opry is evident.
