A few weeks back it was Crystal Gayle's turn and tonight during the Friday Night Opry, and their 100th Opry guest appearance, Dailey & Vincent were invited by Marty Stuart to become the newest members of the Grand Ole Opry. March 11 will be the date.
A great move by the Opry to a duo that I am sure will support the Opry and continue the great bluegrass tradition on the Opry's stage.
Wow!! We go 2 years without a new member and suddenly we have 2 in 2 months.
Congratulations to Dailey & Vincent.
Congratulations to Dailey & Vincent becoming the Grand Ole Opry's newest member. It was long overdue. Bob

ReplyDeleteWonderful, a real country act! Thanks for the bulletin, Byron.
Two fantastic additions.
ReplyDeleteNow add several more like the most recent two and maybe we can turn the 'Opry around to once again feature real country music.
Amen to each comment, though I would have referred the other Vincent! Maybe she's next?
ReplyDeleteMy goodness how can you complain about Dailey & Vincent and Crystal Gayle becoming members? I think both will more than give the asked 10 performances and will prove to be faithful members. I'm glad the management is seeking members of this kind, and not who's hot in the top 10. I think we all can agree that most of those choices within the last 30 years have not been the best. Like everyone else I still would like to see acts such as Rhonda Vincent, Gene Watson, The Grascals, Mandy Barnett, Kathy Mattea, Suzy Boggus, Tracy Lawrence, Amber Digby, Ray Stevens, Teea Goens, Aaron Tippin and others added. These are the acts that are going to show up and make the shows worth their money.
ReplyDeleteI am all for Gene Watson, Mandy Barnett, Kathy Mattea, Suzy Boggus, and Ray Stevens. It will probably be a little while before Teea Goens would be seriously considered for membership, in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteI have wondered many times what process the Opry really has in place in regards to adding new members. It has been over 2 years since Little Big Town joined and now you have 2 in a matter of several months. Here is a thought. Jean Shepard passed away and Crystal Gayle has been added. A female country singer replacing a female. Earlier in the year, Ralph Stanley passed away and now Dailey & Vincent has been added. A bluegrass singer being replaced by a bluegrass act. Interesting.
ReplyDeleteI do like the fact that instead of going with the "hot new" act, the Opry has taken a step back from that approach. And based on their own personal track records as guest, you could reasonably expect both Crystal and Dailey & Vincent to be at the Opry at least 10 times per year, or pretty close.
While I will be unable to attend Crystal's induction, I do have my ticket for March 11 and Dailey & Vincent. I am expecting a very good show with lots of bluegrass that night.
Not knowing the entire situation, I do feel bad for Rhonda Vincent as everything I have heard is that she really would like to be an Opry member. She has stated that she has no complaints with the Opry and that they have been very good to her. Yet, no membership seems to be coming her way. When you think about it, there really is no active female bluegrass singer currently as an Opry member. (I know, Alison Krauss is a member, but rarely at the Opry and some of her work has moved her in a different direction.) To me, Rhonda would fill that void.
When Rhonda was in Terre Haute in November we talked about Opry membership. She keeps count too as to how many time she has appeared on the Opry, she just doesn't talk about it. You can tell she really would like and respect being a member. Out of respect, we stopped short of asking why she thought she had not been ask. I still wonder if the former Martha White connection has anything to do with it. On the surface, I can't see or imagine anything she would have done or said against the Opry or management that they could be holding against her.
ReplyDeleteSince they have filled a bluegrass and female spot I can't see her being on the short list at this point. If they keep waiting, they can use the excuse that she has past her peak in popularity, lame, but it could be used.
Surprise us Mr. Fisher!

What happened between the end of the Opry at 10:15 and the Midnite Jamboree last night? Sorry to say I tuned out until just before the Record Shop and when I tuned back in I heard Old Crow counting down to the New Year then Eddie saying good night. What did I miss?

Jim, last night WSM radio broadcast the Old Crow Medicine Show that took place at the Ryman Auditorium after the Grand Ole Opry.
ReplyDeleteFred, Bismarck:
DeleteAnd skipped the Midnite Jamboree? Or did the Jamboree not have a show?
Thanks Byron, trying to keep up on my notes! :)

How about Chris Janson? The guy has made probably 100 Opry shows just in the last year! He's also said repeatedly that he'd do anything for the Opry and WSM!
ReplyDeleteThe number of Janson 'Opry appearance's is 160 at last count.
DeleteIt is absolutely ridiculous that he is not a member.
Fred Bismarck : the Midnight Jamboree followed the always great Crows on Saturday night --- you just gave up too soon ---- Dashmann - Flushing, Michigan
