Some solid shows this week with a lot of variety. Nice to see Eddy Raven back making an appearance.
Regarding the upcoming Ray Charles tribute show, I found the below in this week's billboard update. I believe the PBS part is new (or at least is to me).
ReplyDelete"The Grand Ole Opry, PBS and an influential legend will converge when the WSM-AM Nashville radio show holds a rare Monday-night edition on Oct. 8 to shoot An Opry Salute to Ray Charles, set to air as a PBS special in November. Hosted by Darius Rucker, the evening’s guest list includes Boyz II Men, Chris Young, Brett Eldredge, Cam, Lukas Nelson, Allen Stone, Travis Tritt and Leela James."
One of these days all of you are going to request Byron ban me since I am possibly the most negative thinker here! I try not to be. I can accept change, generation change at that, but some of the things that go on are just over the top.
ReplyDeleteI usually do not get to listen to the Opry shows during the week but I did hear some tonight. I caught Tyler Rich being introduced by Bill Cody. Bill explained his accomplishments and said "here is Tyler Rich". What does Tyler do, he says "hellow everyone, I'm Tyler Rich" Give me a break.
I know these folks are drilled on identity yet they have few if any unique identifying traits. Then, I'm sure most of them do not realize the audience has access to a program that they are listed in or if they do they think the audience can't read. And, do they not listen to the announcers and what they are saying about them? I would suggest that they think you might have missed the introduction on the radio but I doubt many of them even realize it is a radio show.
To me, get out there on the stage and show us what you've got. If you are any good, make an impression on me and I like what you did, I'll find out who you are if I wasn't paying attention to the announcer or can't read my program. If you didn't make an impression on me, do you really want me to remember you and tell my friends?
Sorry folks. As I often do, I'll take it back to the veterans. To the audience the Opry is trying to fill the house with, if anyone should come out and say "hi I'm Humpty Dumpty, it would be them and I never hear that. What I do here is, here is my band, I want you to know who they are. I do think I can hear Rhonda Vincent saying "we are Rhonda Vincent and the Rage" after she finishes her first song.
Just a different time that this graying 52 year old gets irritated by. Thanks for indulging!

Will also add that comedian Bill Murray and the legendary John Prine were on the Tuesday night Opry with the SteelDrivers.
ReplyDeleteI'm curious to know about John Prine's history of Opry appearances? Jim & Jesse covered "Paradise" way back when the Opry House opened, I think? I know the SteelDrivers have appeared at the Opry over 50 times. Robert
DeleteTotal armchair quarterbacking here as there are SO many deserving "regulars" that should be Opry Members but the Opry would gain such a loyal fan base if John Prine became a member. He lives in Nashville and sell out shows wherever he goes. He's such a brilliant songwriter and stylist. His new album "Tree of Forgiveness" is a masterpiece. And if you want to go back further, I've nearly worn out his duet album with Mac Wiseman "Songs for Ordinary People." Plus he has a close relationship with Marty and Connie (she duets with him on "So Sad to Watch Good Love Go Back" on the album In Spite of Ourselves.) (oldtimeopry)
ReplyDeleteWhat a voice Mandy Barnett has. I have loved her singing ever since i had seen her in "Always Patsy Cline." Speaking of members. I don't know why Mandy isn't a member. Bob
ReplyDeleteTo Jim of Knightsville IN - I am with you all the way !! (from Anonymous in PA)
ReplyDeleteMandy Barnett has paid her dues, has a fabulous voice, and is a very nice person. Past time for her to be an 'Opry member.
ReplyDeleteDo you supppose that Mandy Barnett may have been asked and declined? So many of us believe she would be a great addition yet it is not happening. (from Anonymous in PA)
