  1. This isn't related to a particular post but just a report.

The Oak Ridge Boys played in Terre Haute, Indiana yesterday for a show in the afternoon and one in the evening. We attended the afternoon show.

Before the show a gentleman came out and gave a little history of the Oaks and mentioned their awards and that they were members of the Opry. That was the only mention of the Opry. I never did know if the gentleman was their manager or who he was but it sounded like he had been with them a long time.

They did an hour and fifteen minutes and performed 21 songs. Joe was the only one who did any talking. 14 songs in he talked with the audience and discussed their new album Front Porch Singing then they did five songs from it. They received a partial standing ovation and stayed on stage to do Bobbie Sue.

I've never followed the Oaks much. Never had anything against them at all but the Statler Brothers were more to my liking. The first time we ever saw them was at Opryland in 1976 as they performed Y'all Come Back Saloon over and over until they got it right for the TV show being taped. I have to say that they did a wonderful show yesterday and sounded good considering they have been at it for over 50 years. As things go these days, I'm very happy they are members of the Opry.

I was a little surprised that they did not meet the fans after the show. Hatfield Hall only seats 602 people and it was just a few seats short of capacity. I can understand why they might not have done it at the height of their career but I figured they would at this point.

Anyway, it was a very enjoyable show.

  2. To be very blunt Jim, the Oak Ridge Boys are old (72-82), and not sure hanging around after the show with Covid around is up their alley.
Glad you enjoyed the show. Sunday doesn't work for our family. We would have enjoyed it.

  3. Also, with a second show on the same day, I'm sure the time after the show was put to good use in resting up for the second show. While they do all look younger than they are, it does take a lot out of performers to do their shows.

Speaking of the Statler Brothers, I saw them doing an arena show in the mid-80's, (the older members would have been in their 40's) and was backstage as they came off before their encore and Harold was wiped out, but when they were called back on stage, he was all go. We sometimes don't think how hard artists work to give us the show we're expecting.

    Joe is 73
    Duane is 78
    William Lee is 82
    Richard is 78

  4. Not country, but a great story that may explain it. Jack Benny was pushing 80 and before a show he would be shuffling around backstage, looking tired. One time the entertainment director--it was on the Las Vegas Strip--asked his manager if Benny could go on. The manager said, "Wait." Benny is just off stage, hunched over. The orchestra hits the first chord of his theme music and Benny stood up straight, shed 20 years, and walked right out and knocked them dead.

  5. We have seen the Oak Ridge Boys many times (love them) and they never disappoint. We will see them in a few weeks in Branson and so looking forward to their show. Try not to miss an opportunity. We did the same with the Statler Brothers (and saw them more, always outstanding) and fortunately managed to see their Farewell Tour. We didn't make it to their last show but have the DVD and you would never know that when it was over they would be retired - such energy and appreciation of their audience. Did the same for George Strait and then all of a sudden he wasn't touring anymore and he isn't that old and Alan Jackson is already having serious health issues. My philosophy, if I like the entertainers and can get to their show, I am going !! (from Anonymous in PA)

  6. A couple quick notes. Sorry if my comments came off negative about them not meeting fans. Not intended. Joe did comment that since they started back touring, our audience was the first they had played to that were fully masked. He said "and that's ok if that is the requirements in place". Also, Joe introduced the band near the end and forgot to mention that.
