Tuesday Night Opry 9/6 & Opry Country Classics 9/8

I find it very hard to believe that Opry member Pam Tillis has not made an appearance at the Opry thus far in 2022. Since she joined the Opry in 2000, she usually has been counted on to make 10 or so appearances each year. But so far this year, zero. It's not like she isn't doing anything as she has been out on tour, making numerous appearances and has been active while in Nashville.

That will change on Tuesday night as Pam is on the schedule for the mid-week show. Opry members John Conlee and Riders In The Sky will be joining her, along with the wonderful Sierra Hull. And as is the case with pretty much every Opry show, there will be a debut as Mike & The Moonpies will be making their first Opry appearances.

Tuesday September 6
7:00: Riders In The Sky, Ray Fulcher, Sierra Hull, Mike & The Moonpies
Intermission
8:15: John Conlee, Chris Shiflett, John Crist, Pam Tillis

If I was in Nashville on Thursday night, I would definitely be checking out Opry Country Classics. A couple of artists who don't make it to Nashville often, Moe Bandy and Janie Fricke are on the schedule, along with Sawyer Brown and Mandy Barnett. I didn't see who the spotlight artist is, but it could easily be Moe, Janie or Sawyer Brown as all have had substantial careers with a number of hits.

Thursday September 7
Larry Gatlin
The Gatlin Brothers
Moe Bandy
Janie Fricke
Sawyer Brown
Mandy Barnett

Enjoy these shows.

  1. Tickets would appear to be selling quite well for the Thursday Night 'Opry Country Classics. With that lineup, I'm not surprised!
Bodes well for traditional country acts appearing more often in the future, I hope!

  2. Too bad Janie lives in Texas.....as far as I know. As strong as her ties are to Nashville from the 70's on I think she would make a good member.....and I like to hear her sing.

  3. I like the way the Opry is having Riders in the Sky open or close the shows recently. Nice line-up for tonight, outstanding line-up for Thursday's Opry Country Classics. Byron, if I recall correctly, Bill Cody said Sawyer Brown is the Spotlight Artist Thursday. Good, that means a couple more songs by them. Woo-Hoo! LOVE their music!

    1. I did not mean to leave anyone out from my post above, I failed to say I am looking forward to everyone appearing both nights except I don't see Don Schlitz isn't on either list, darn. Jeff Hoag mentioned that is excited that Janie Fricke will be appearing Thursday night, he had just played a song by her.

Love me some Jeff Hoag, he plays country music records & artists I have never heard ever. WHO is Connie Cato? Never heard of her until he recently played "I'll Be A Lady Tomorrow" that I was hoping he would play it back-to-back, darn, he didn't. Eddie Stubbs would warn listeners, if they were in their cars to pull over for the very powerful song he was about to play & it was always a great song. I still miss Eddie Stubbs but Jeff Hoag is as outstanding at what he does throughout the week & Sunday mornings as Eddie was. WSM made a great choice of placing Jeff in the seat that Eddie retired from two years ago. Thank you WSM.

      Enjoy both shows everyone ~

  4. Jeanene, I can not agree more regarding Jeff Hoag. He is a MOST welcome addition to WSM. He took a day off last Monday, so he came in last night on Labor Day and did his usual great show.
His catalog is deeper than Eddies, it seems to me. I hear something every night I have never heard before, and that's a tough job for him!

Jim, I also agree on Janie Fricke . I live in Bloomington Indiana, and when she attended Indiana University she used to sing at the local Holiday Inn. I remember seeing her name on the sign out front.
Talk about a dummy, I never went to hear her sing back then. Of course that was way before she had her long list #1 hits.
God gave her a very unique voice, and she's a VERY nice person to talk to.

She's staying in Texas, I'm afraid. She seems to love it there. Her husband plays a lot of local shows, and I've often wondered if she doesn't appear with him now and then. Talk about a welcome guest singer!

    1. Hi Nat ... I did listen to Jeff last night. He was off the previous Friday & then last Monday. I do not know where he finds all the songs we have never heard before but country music is what he serves up every night & there are more "shuffles" recorded than I would have ever thought. I'm not going to say he out-beats Eddie in that department, to me, they each play(ed) different era's of country music but one thing in common is they both are all about the shuffles. And I have to say that Jeff will play Elvis Presley, Eddie made himself perfectly clear that he would not, because he saw Elvis more of a rock n' roller, even though he knew Elvis was a Country Music HoF'r. Interesting how they both see Elvis differently but with both being correct. Much like the Everly Brothers, for me, they are more rock n' roll than country artists, though they started out in country music. Living up north, I heard their music on rock n roll WLS, not necessarily the local country station, WJJD. I watched them on American Bandstand so when Jeff plays them, for me they are being played on the wrong radio station, but not really, they are also Country Music HoF'rs so play them all he wants. I normally listen in on the back end of his show on my AA battery operated Sony Walkman I still have after all the years I've had it. I still love to hear static, or music fading in and out, love radio. I bought my first Smartphone a little over three years ago, as you might guess, the first app that I installed? Yep ... WSM. I live in Northern Illinois, approximately a 45 minute drive to the border of Wisconsin, so far away for WSM to not come in on my radio some nights.

I listened to Eddie Stubbs from the first night he stood behind the WSM mic until he retired. Jeff Hoag does his own thing, he has themed nights just like Eddie did, only different. Monday's are "B-sides" & other oddity records, love listening to the B-sides, he also does what Eddie did, talks about who wrote the song & who played on the song. Tonight will be a lot of bluegrass, just so wonderful & tomorrow night will be "this week in country music" that Jeff did on his old Saturday show before Eddie retired. Thursday's are 70's, 80's & 90's night & then he continued with the All-Request show that Eddie started maybe 15 years ago? I am happy the All-Request show lives on post-Eddie. If I want to see or hear Eddie all I have to do is turn on the old Marty Stuart show on RFD-TV, I will still watch that terrific show after all these years.

Went to see The Mavericks back in July ... they were absolutely outstanding! I sure would love it if Opry management would try to get them in the Opry House & let them have the stage for about 30 minutes, heck, why not 45 minutes? All the musicianship in that eclectic band is mind boggling, drums, guitars, keyboards, accordion, trumpet, saxophone, tambourines, besides Raul Malo's great, great voice, all going at one time, it was just a wall of sound for minutes short of two hours. I saw Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder in concert last November, I can say the same for them, another wall of outstanding sound. All of the musicianship out there is just unbelievable.

      Have a good week Nat.

  5. The Mavericks are going to be at Rose-Hulman, a university in Jim's home town of Terre Haute this year. I appreciate the information about them. It's not a long trip!
We know Jeff has at least TWO fans, but I'm guessing he has far more.
And, our 'Opry member Charlie McCoy was a big part of Elvis' country records. So was Jerry Reed. Elvis loved gospel music and country music. Everything he touched turned to gold, didn't it?

    1. Hi Nat ... if you like the Maverick's music & if you are able to, the drive will be more than worth it. My sisters & I drove all the way to Shipshewanna, Indiana to see them, about a 2-1/2 hour one-way drive. Never saw them before in concert before but I'd do it again tomorrow if they were there. Shipshewanna is great! Love going there. So peaceful & beautiful. One sees cars & trucks on those roads & all of a sudden one hears the clacking sound of horses hooves pulling the little black buggy's of the lovely Amish people. Such striking opposites of transportation on the same roadways, respectful of each other.

Agreed, Jeff has more than just the two of us as fans & that is a very good thing, may keep him on the air longer, we both know how it goes on radio.

I am a fan of Charlie McCoy's as well, happy he is an Opry member as well. He has played on tons of records & yes, everything that Elvis did turned to gold ... gold records, gold lame suits, gold jewelry ... #truth
